Alma Cubana Dance was founded in the spring of 2015 by Vanessa Webber (Gutierrez). Alma Cubana means "Cuban Soul", and being half Cuban, she wanted her group to reflect that heritage. It has been a long standing dream to offer classes, build a performance group and to help grow the Salsa and Latin dance community in Southern/Midcoast Maine.
Our focus is to bring quality instruction while maintaining the social atmosphere of Salsa dance.
Vanessa Webber (Gutierrez), founder/director
Vanessa started dancing Ballet and Modern dance at the age of 3 with Portland School of Ballet in Maine as well as with Ram Island Dance, Boston Ballet, Walnut Hill, and other schools across the country. Dancing with Portland Ballet Company, she performed numerous soloist roles in performances such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and in many world premieres. She has also been an extra for the movie The Boondock Saints, performed in the Musical FAME as the lead role; Iris Kelley, and was invited to perform with Prometheus Dance and American Ballet Theatre. Vanessa attended The Boston Conservatory for two years as a dance major training and performing before taking a break from dance and moving on to study Physical Therapy. Vanessa rediscovered her passion for dance and became more in touch with her Latin heritage while out salsa dancing in 2005. After a few months of classes here and there, she began training more seriously. In September 2005, Vanessa was invited to train and perform with a semi-professional team where she quickly moved into a professional group by 2006. She was one of the original founders of Rumba y Timbal in Boston where she taught and choreographed all levels and age ranges as well as managed class registration and the Ladies performance team.
She moved back to Maine in 2011 where she kept dancing here and there. Vanessa took a short hiatus to give birth to her beautiful daughter. She is excited and inspired by the progress and accomplishments already made with Alma Cubana members and she is eager to get back into the world of dance and help to build a stronger Salsa and Latin dance community in her home state.
